A/An — The indefinite article
A : is used before a word beginning with a consonant.
A : is used before a vowel with a consonant sound.
Eg — a Man, a University, a one eyed man, a European.
An : is used before words beginning with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u)
An : is used before words beginning with a mute ‘h’ Eg— an apple , an hour
– Before individual letters spoken with a vowel sound

Use of a / an . A/an is used before a singular countable noun (mentioned for the first time representing particular person or things) Eg — She bought a toy.
B) Before a singular countable noun representing a class of things.
-A vehicle must be insured (All vehicles must be insured)
C) With noun complement (Nouns representing professions)
-He was a doctor.
(D) In certain expressions of quantity
. Eg. A good deal of. A lot of , A couple, A little, A few ,a good deal of
(E) With numbers ; a Hundred, a thousand , 11/2-one and a half, 21/2-two and a half(A+half+Noun)A half day1/3-a third1/4-a quarter).

(G) 1. With exclamations having singular countable noun.

H). ( A+Mr/Mrs/Miss +surname )
A Mr Verma = A Stranger
Mr Verma= Known to the speaker
The Verma= The whole Verma family
Omission of A/an – Before plural nouns Books, School(Note : A/an has no plural form)
– Before uncountable nouns Water, oil
– Before names of meals having no adjectives. They have dinner at night She gave a good dinner
Use of article ‘The (before consonant pronounced” d” ,BEFORE VOWEL PRONOUNCED “di,” before superlative degree “di:”
‘Rule1 – ( The + adjective + plural verb ) ( The + singular noun + S.verb )
Eg.. 1) The guilty were punished 2) The dog is a faithful animal (S.noun)
Rule2 – ( The+ noun+ preposition )
Eg.. 1) The girl with red sari 2) The boy with his friends

Rule4 – Both the, the same , The end, The only, The start, The beginning, ( The+ very + superlative degree), ( Much+ the +superlative degree, )
Eg….1) Both the person are the same. 2) This is the very best way. 3) That is the only project I choose. 4) Ram is much the best boy of his class
.Rule5 – ( The + superlative degree ) ( The + most + Adjective)
Eg..1) This is the longest way (superlative degree) 2) She is the most beautiful lady
Rule6 – ( The + comparative degree ), (The + More/less+ etc……the more/the less+etc)
Eg…1) The deeper you go, the cooler it becomes. 2) the more we get , the more we desire.
Rule7 – With adjectives to refer to a thing or a group of people described by the adjective.
Eg…1) With him you should always expect the unexpected 2) The forgotten are welcomed
Rule8 -(The + sb’s last name =the whole family )
Eg.. the vermas are cordially invited
Rule9 -( The + noun =enough for sth for a particular purpose).
Eg..1) I wanted it but I did not have the money. (The money = money enough for sth)
Rule10 – (The = every.- (as unit of measurement)
Eg.. My car goes fourth miles to the gallon. (The gallon = every gallon)
Rule11 –( The =A unit of time to mean ‘the present)‘.
Eg.. The dish of the day (The day = the present day)
Rule12 – The (di:) = famous /important
Eg.. this is Ram , not the Ram
Rule13 -( By+ the+ parts of body )
Eg..1) He caught him by the car 2) By the head 3)By the hair 4) By the leg
Rule14 – Market, College, University, School, prison, Hospital, Temple, Church, Mosque – No use of ‘the’ if there is primary purpose
Eg.. He goes to school to read – Use of ‘the’ if there is secondary purpose Eg.. He goes to the school to meet his son
Rule15 – With directions
Eg..The East, the North, the South
Rule 16– ( The +adjective+proper noun)

Rule17 – with ordinals

Rule18 A – The +common noun = the force of an abstract noun
Eg.. The mother (motherly Feelings) in her moved on seeing the suffering child.
Rule18 –( The + comparative degree + of + the two + noun )
