A/An — The indefinite article

A : is used before a word beginning with a consonant.

: is used before a vowel with a consonant sound.

Eg — a  Man, a University, a one eyed man, a European.

An : is used before words beginning with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) 

An : is used before words beginning with a mute ‘h’ Eg— an apple  ,   an hour    

   – Before individual letters spoken with a vowel sound

.Eg. an R.A.S, an S.P
Use of a / an . A/an is used before a singular countable noun (mentioned for the first time representing particular person or things) Eg — She bought a toy.

B) Before a singular countable noun representing a class of things

 -A vehicle must be insured  (All vehicles must be insured)
C) With noun complement (Nouns representing professions)  

 -He was a doctor.

(D) In  certain expressions of quantity

. Eg.     A good deal of.  A lot of ,  A couple, A little, A few ,a good deal of

(E) With numbers ;   a Hundred,  a thousand ,  11/2-one and a half,   21/2-two and a half(A+half+Noun)A half day1/3-a third1/4-a quarter).

(F)   An/A = per       10₹ a kilo    Three times a day)

(G) 1. With exclamations having singular countable noun

  Eg: *Such a long way!    *What a wonderful day!

H). (  A+Mr/Mrs/Miss +surname )

  A Mr Verma     =      A Stranger   

 Mr Verma=           Known to the speaker    

The Verma=       The whole Verma family

 Omission of A/an       – Before plural nouns           Books, School(Note : A/an has no plural form)       

  – Before uncountable nouns             Water, oil        

 – Before names of meals having no adjectives.           They have dinner at night           She gave a good dinner

  Use of article ‘The (before consonant pronounced” d” ,BEFORE VOWEL PRONOUNCED “di,” before superlative degree “di:”

‘Rule1 –  (  The + adjective + plural verb  )           ( The + singular noun + S.verb )          

   Eg.. 1) The guilty were punished                  2) The dog is a faithful animal                           (S.noun)

Rule2  – (  The+ noun+ preposition  )       

 Eg.. 1) The girl with red sari                2) The boy with his friends

Rule3 -( The + noun+ VIII/v+ ing   )                                 

     Eg… The book found on the way was precious.

Rule4  Both the,    the same ,   The end,             The only,      The start,             The beginning,           ( The+ very + superlative degree),         (  Much+ the +superlative degree,  )

   Eg….1) Both the person are the same.             2) This is the very best way.            3) That is the only project I choose.            4) Ram is much the best boy of his class

.Rule5 – (  The + superlative degree  )            ( The + most + Adjective)

        Eg..1) This is the longest way (superlative degree)             2) She is the most beautiful lady 

 Rule6 – ( The + comparative degree ),  (The + More/less+ etc……the more/the less+etc)                     

           Eg…1) The deeper you go, the cooler it becomes.                 2) the more we get , the more we desire. 

  Rule7 – With adjectives to refer to a thing or a group of people described by the adjective.     

  Eg…1) With him you should always expect the unexpected             2) The forgotten are welcomed  

 Rule8 -(The + sb’s last name =the whole family  )      

   Eg.. the vermas are cordially invited 

 Rule9 -( The + noun =enough for sth for a particular purpose).         

  Eg..1) I wanted it but I did not have the money.  (The money = money enough for sth)

Rule10 (The = every.- (as unit of measurement)          

 Eg.. My car goes fourth miles to the gallon.          (The gallon = every gallon)

Rule11( The =A unit of time to mean ‘the present)‘.       

   Eg.. The dish of the day       (The day = the present day)

Rule12 The (di:)   = famous /important         

    Eg.. this is Ram , not the Ram

Rule13 -( By+ the+ parts of body  )  

    Eg..1) He caught him by the car             2) By the head            3)By the hair            4) By the leg

Rule14 – Market, College, University, School, prison, Hospital, Temple, Church, Mosque      – No use of ‘the’ if there is primary purpose     

 Eg.. He goes to school to read     – Use of ‘the’ if there is secondary purpose       Eg.. He goes to the school to meet his son

Rule15With directions       

  Eg..The East, the North, the South  

 Rule  16–   ( The +adjective+proper noun)        

   Eg.. 1) the Dr. khurana                  2)The great Nepoleon,

Rule17 with ordinals      

     Eg..1) She was the first to come                2) The sixth chapter of this is very interesting.

Rule18 AThe +common noun = the force of an abstract noun          

 Eg.. The mother (motherly  Feelings) in her moved on seeing the suffering child.

Rule18( The + comparative degree + of + the two + noun ) 

  Eg.. She is the abler of the two sisters

Rule19A particular person/ thing already referred to     

  Eg..1) The book you want is not available

Rule20 The is used before :

A) Names of scriptures

1) The Gita                                        2)The Bible

B) Names of newspapers-

1) The Rajasthan Patrika                                       2) The Hindu

C) Names of rivers, canals ,seas, oceans, gulfs, groups of islands etc.

  1) The Ganga  2) The Indian ocean 3) The Indira Gandhi canal 4) The Persian gulf

D) Names of Nationals, sects and communities

1) The English 2) The German 3) The poor 4) The Hindus

E) Proper nouns used as common noun

  Eg.. Delhi is the London of India

F) Famous historical events

1) The French revolution

G) Names of unique things 

  Eg..The earth         The sun         The moon

H)  Titles

:1) Alexander, the great 2) Akbar, the great

I) before musical instruments

  1) He can play the guitar  2) She will play the flute

J) The names of states, countries having a descriptive name

  1) The Punjab  2) The USA  3) The U.K  4) The USSR

K) Before continents

1) The Asian 2) The Africa

L) Before the National Days

1) The 15 August 2) The 26 January 3) The 2 October

M) Before post  

  1) The prime Minister    2) The head master
